Are you basket ready for the traditional Easter Egg Hunt in the gardens of the Château d’Ussé, 21st and 22nd of April? This year in addition to the traditional egg hunt, the Easter Bunny and Sleeping Beauty will distribute the chocolate eggs to the children. They will be photographed with the children if they wish.

Exhibition 2019 – The Embroiderer or Edge Trimmer

This year’s 2019 exhibition displays some marvellous embroideries. They were produced by “tiny hands”, experts with at least fifteen years’ experience whose expertise is awe inspiring …. and we should be so thankful to the men and women who have bequeathed us these masterpieces!

For centuries embroidery was regarded as a luxury and then it rapidly became used by the Haute Couture houses as a signature statement of their art.

From the middle of the 19th century until the 1970s, famous embroidery workshops, such as Lesage, Michonnet, Vermont or Brocard from Paris were used by names such as Frédéric Worth at Christian Dior.

A combination of artistic genius, originality and tried and tested techniques have kept the art alive, even today!

Let’s not forget “Whitework Embroidery” either, famous in Appenzell and Saint-Gall, Switzerland and Saxe in Germany and also in Glasgow, Scotland, Belfast in Ireland, etc.

Exhibition 2018Summer chic

Organdi, silk, baptist, linon, Indian muslin and cotton: these textures breathe the lightness of hot and sunny summers.

Since the dawn of time and until today, the seasons have forced the human being to adapt his outfits. Elegants have not deviated from the rule, and the great designers have helped them a lot. Some high-end houses, such as Lucien Lelong, Madeleine Vionnet, Jean Patou and many others, have even made it their specialty.

If today the summer toilets denude often the body, at other times even recent enough the postures and the constraints are always present. Summer and winter, we kept corsets, petticoats, turns and baskets underneath, big shoes, capelines, hoods and shawls above.

Even in the heat of summer, whatever the cost, stay “chic”!

Heritage Weekend – 16 & 17 of September

Free entrance for all visitors until 18 years old (included) during this coming European Heritage days, 16^th and 17^th of September 2017.

For this 34^th edition, the theme has for objective to raise awareness of the young generations in the knowledge and the conservation of the heritage. The Château d’Ussé is proud to be part of this national heritage and exceptionally for the occasion will open the dining room and private living room.

Exhibition 2017: “Precious velvet”

Did you know that a study of fashion can take you on a better journey through history than many history books? Each year the Château d’Ussé regales us with a different exhibition of period costumes! This year, we will follow the steps of this precious fabric, “the velvet”.

For a long time the prerogative of princes and kings, symbol of power and wealth, velvet has traversed the centuries evolving to the rhythm of needs, demands and covetousness.

Although born in China more than two thousand years before our era, we will have to wait until the 12th century to see its arrival in Italy.

The weavers of Venice, Genoa and Lucca were the first to try producing the rich velvet textures in Europe.

Originally made from silk, velvet requires up to 6 times more material than traditional fabrics and is therefore reserved for an elite. It was somewhat democratized in the 19th century thanks to the use of cotton.

As “Fur textile”, the only three-dimensional fabric, velvet is sometimes plain, sometimes ciselé, embossed, crushed, pile-on-pile, voided, Devoré, hammered, gregarious, gandin or even chiffon.
